Tennis is an amazing game.

Objective

The objective of the player is to win points by keeping the tennis ball in play hitting it above the net after its served .The player floundering first loses the point to his opponent. When a player wins six games with two more than the opponent, he wins the set. The matches are three setters or five setters .To win a match, a player has to win more sets than his opponent.

Court Layout

Tennis courts are flat rectangular surfaces dimensionally 23.77 meters long, 8.23 meters wide for singles and 10.97 meters wide for doubles matches. The surface is made of grass, clay, concrete or synthetic suspenders for indoor matches. An area 18.28 meters wide and 36.58 meters long is available around the court. A net 1.07 meters high at posts and 0.914 meters high at the center running parallel to the baselines divides the court in two equal halves. The left part of the court is the advantage court and the right part is the deuce court.

Game Description

The game begins with the server tossing the ball and hitting it while in air from his deuce court to the diagonally opposite deuce court of the opponent. Each game consists of four points-Fifteen, thirty, forty and the winning point. The server gets two serves during a point. If he commits a double fault, he loses the point. After the first point, both players move to their advantage courts. If a player wins a game on his opponent’s serve, it’s called ‘Breaking the serve’. The player who races to six games first with a margin of two games over the opponent, wins the set. A game at 6-5 may end at 7-5 or go into a tie-breaker at 6-6.A player must win three sets to win a five sets match.

Rules

After each point, players keep alternating between the deuce and advantage courts till the game is won

Players change ends at the first, third and every subsequent odd game of each set.

Players also change ends at the end of each set unless total number of games in that set is even. If so, players change ends at the end of first game of the next set.

During tie-break games, ends are changed after every six points.

For Deuce games (40-40), the first player winning two consecutive points wins the game.

A ball touching the line is regarded as touching the court.

Strategy, Skills and Tactics

The best strategy to win a match is to play hard for every point .A good tactic to tire the opponent is creating deeper angles to keep the opponent on the move and gaining time for the next shot. Serving an ace, a serve the opponent can’t touch, is equally rewarding. A player with better court coverage and a penetrative serve is more likely to win the game.
