Lane Layout Regulation bowling lanes are 60 feet from the foul line to first pin. It is also between 41 and 42 inches wide. Lanes are bordered by gutters, which gather the ball if it goes out of the regulation lane. There is virtually no way of knocking down a pin if the ball is in the gutter. Game Description Bowling is a sport in which players roll a ball down a lane with the intent to knock down pins. It can be played alone, or with others. It is common for teams to form at bowling alleys, and even leagues. It is common for regular bowlers to own their own ball and set of bowling shoes. The most common form of bowling is 10-Pin Bowling, in which four rows of pins that accumulate to ten total pins are formed in a triangle formation. Candlepin bowling is a variation of 10-Pin Bowling, but uses a different type of pins which can be setup on either side. Rules Bowling is broken down into 10 frames. In each frame, a player is allowed two tries to knock down all of the pins. If he knocks them all down in the first try, he is given a strike. A strike gives the player 10 points, plus however many more points he can accumulate in the next two balls. If he knocks them down in the second try, it is a spare. He then gets 10 points plus however many on the next ball. The most one can get in a single frame is 30 points, which is by getting a strike and then a combination of strikes or spares in the following frames. The tenth frame of bowling is different than the nine previous. The tenth frame can be given two extra bonus rolls, pending the player gets a strike or spare in the first ball. The most points one can score in a game of bowling is 300 points. These are usually shown as perfect games, and are a great accomplishment for amateurs and pros alike. Strategy There are many different ways a player can throw the ball down the lane. The most popular is a hook ball, in which the ball arcs on the lane and increases the chance for a strike. Hook balls, however, increase the chance for gutter balls. It takes a lot of practice for an amateur to become as skillful as a professional. It is common for amateurs to step over the foul line after the ball is thrown. If this happens, no pins are counted, and the pins are “re-racked” if it is the first ball in the frame.
