Layout Eight-Ball Pool is played on a Billiards Table. The table is rectangular, with a pocket in each corner and a pocket in each of the long sides. In-between the pockets there are cushions. Description The game starts with 16 balls on the table; 15 of them are numbered and the 16th is the white cue ball. Numbers 1 through 7 are solid colors and numbers 9 through 15 are striped. All of the numbered balls are colored: 1 and 9 are yellow, 2 and 10 are blue, 3 and 11 are red, 4 and 14 are purple, 5 and 15 are orange, 6 and 14 are green, 7 and 15 are brown, and 8 is solid black. At the beginning of the game the numbered balls are arranged in a triangle with the base parallel to the end rail and the opposite point of the triangle on the foot spot. The 8 ball should be placed in the centre of the triangle. On the opposite side of the table a semicircle is marked, in which the cue ball starts. Rules Players take shots using their cue to hit the cue ball, which can be directed to move other balls on the table. The first turn is called ‘the break’ because the triangle of colored balls must be broken. For a legal break, at least 4 of the balls must touch a cushion, or at least one ball must be pocketed. If the break is not legal, the opponent can gather up the balls and break again, or choose to play on as it is. A player (or team) continues to take shots until they either commit a foul or fail to pocket a ball. Players are either designated the low numbers (solid colors) or high numbers (striped colors). Fouls commonly committed include: - A player failing to hit any of his own balls before any others, or at all. - Pocketing the cue ball - The cue ball is touched with something other than the tip of the cue - The shooter knocks a ball off the table If the cue ball is pocketed or knocked off the table before the game ends, it is replaced inside the semi-circle from where it started. It may be placed anywhere in the circle, and is called ‘ball in hand’. If the player pockets the 8 ball illegally (such as pocketing the 8 ball before the other balls, or pocketing the cue ball at the same time), the other player wins. There are often local variations and ‘pub rules’ on this game. Strategy, tips and tricks Finishing your turn with the balls arranged in such a way to make it very difficult or impossible for your opponent to make a legal move is a good strategy.
