How to play Rummy(basic) Rummy is a wonderful card Game. Objective To be the first player to be able to get rid of all your cards, or to minimise the penalty by having the lowest score.
Game Layout Two decks of 52 cards are used. A single card is dealt to decide who takes the first play-play then proceeds clockwise around the table. Ten cards are initially dealt to each player, the remaining cards are kept face down as the stock, one of which is turned face up as the discard pile. An area of the table is designated as the meld area. Game Description It is first advisable to order your cards however is your preference so that you can more easily see what melds you can make. Most commonly you would order numerically. Players choose to either take a card from the stock pile, or may take the top card of the discard pile. On your turn, once you've taken a card from either the stock or the discard pile, you can make a meld and put it down. If you've more than one meld you can put them all down, one at a time. You can also add onto other people's melds. For instance if they melded three aces and you've the fourth, you can add that. The game is complete when one of the players melds all of their cards. At this point, depending on the variation of rummy that you are playing, you are required to either have a last card to discard, or else you can go out on a meld. Again depending upon the variation you are playing, at this point players remaining can either make any outstanding melds, or are forced to keep them all in their hand. Points are scored for any melds that you make according to the value of the cards that you put into the meld. Penalties are awarded for any cards that you've remaining in your hand. Rules If the stock pile is exhausted during play, it's turned and the top card placed as the start of the discard pile. A meld is the formation of a set of cards. The set can be either three or four of a kind (ie four aces, each a different suit) or a run of a minimum of three cards, all the same suit (ie ace, two, three of spades). A run can be the entire suit, from ace as the lowest, to king. Nothing else is permisable. If it is possible to meld all your cards at once, and you have not melded any to that point in the game, then you can declare a rummy. This is hard to achieve but doubles your final score. Strategy, Skills and Tactics If you do not think that you will succeed in going out, if one of the other players looks like being there first, then it is advisable to discard on any remaining turns, the highest value cards that you are holding. This minimises the penalties against your score. Last update : 13-12-2007 18:45
