Board Layout Scrabble is played on a 15x15 grid layout with various grid cells providing bonuses. These bonuses can include double/triple letter score and double/triple word score. There are 100 tiles used on the grid. Of these tiles: 98 contain letters along with a point value ranging from 1 to 10. The most common letters have the lower point values; letters that are used less often have a higher point value. There are also two blank tiles in the game. These can be used as any letter, but carry no point value. Once they are used in the game, they must remain whatever letter value they were originally given throughout the duration of the game. Game Description Scrabble can be played with 2-4 players. At the beginning of the game, players draw letters. The letter closest to the beginning of the alphabet determines who goes first. Then each player draws 7 letters and game play is started. The first word of the game must start out on the center star, and is worth double points. Game play then proceeds clockwise. There is usually a satchel or sack which contains all of the scrabble letter tiles. Players use this to retrieve their tiles. All of the tiles can just as easily be placed faced down instead of using the sack. The tiles contain every letter in the alphabet with varying quantities, and two blank tiles. The tile shows the letter, and its score value. If the letter is common, it has a lower value than a rarer letter (for example, an A is worth 1 while a Q is worth 10). The blank tiles can be used as any letter in the alphabet, but contains no score value. Rules During ones turn in Scrabble, they have three options. They can use any of the letters on their rack to form a word on the board, forfeit their turn and receive no points, or return a number of letters from their rack back into the bag and retrieve enough letters to add up to 7 letters. Also, any bonus used during game play can only be used once. Strategy, Skills and Tactics Experienced Scrabble players who play often memorize different words in the Scrabble dictionary. They train themselves to be able to notice words from an alphagram, or random set of letters. Being able to notice various words can contribute to a higher score. Players also try and use all 7 of their letters at once. If that happens, a Bingo occurs and they are awarded 50 additional points. Using the bonuses found on the board also cause a higher score. Using combinations of these bonus tiles can make a quadruple or even sextuple score. They occur rarely, however. Last update : 30-07-2008 18:08
