How To Play Tug Of War Objective The object of the game is to tug the rope until one team or the mark on the rope has been tugged across the centre line into another team’s territory.
Game Layout The playing area is flat with no wet patches and dry throughout it’s length. The length of each pulling area should accommodate the length of the rope, two times the pull length and a safety zone at either ends. The pulling area has a width of at least 4 meters to allow the participants to move to the left or the right without losing their balance. A line perpendicular to the pulling area is drawn through the centre dividing the playing area. The rope has a red mark at it’s centre which is level with the ground mark when the tugging begins. Two white marks 4 meters on either side of the red mark are drawn on the rope. Two blue marks 5 meters on either side from the red mark on the centre are drawn. The first puller in either teams has to grip the rope outside and as close to the blue marks as possible. Game Description Each team has eight participants who take position in their respective playing areas. The first player in each team grips the rope , as close as possible , but outside , the blue mark on the rope. On being signaled to pull by the umpire, the players start pulling the rope to their side of the playing area. A team wins the pull when the white mark , 4 meters from the central red mark on the rope, or the opponents , cross the central line on the ground. Rules At the beginning, the rope must be taut and the central red mark on the rope must be over the central line marked on the ground. Each player must hold the rope with the ordinary grip. Any other grip preventing the free movement of the rope is a lock and is an infringement of rules. The rope must not be locked across any body part of the player. If players from both teams drop the rope before a team has won, the umpire declares the pull a ‘No Pull’. The footwear must not contain any projections that can penetrate the ground in the playing area. The footwear is inspected before the pull begins. Strategy, Skills, and Tactics The game demands great strength and stamina. An underhand grip , with the arms fully extended is the best grip. Looping the rope around any body part isn’t allowed and can also result in impaired blood flow. Although the players pull the rope, they are required to push with the legs and drag the rope along. Keeping the arm and body completely straight allows the player to transfer the full strength of his legs to the rope. Tug of war is a team sport and all members of the team need to work together to win. Last update : 13-12-2007 18:15
