How to Play Musical Chairs

Objective

To be the person who, at the end of the game, still has a chair to sit on.

Game Layout

As many people as want to play are able to-limited only by the number of chairs you have available and having the space to lay all the chairs out. At the start of the game there are one less chairs set out than there are people who are playing. The chairs are either placed back to back for the people to circle around, or else they are set next to each other, alternating which direction they face.

A music source is required-either electronic (for instance a CD player or radio) or a person with a musical instrument that they can play and stop quickly. The person who controls the music does not play.

Game Description

Musical chairs is simple, yet hugely fun game often played for entertainment at parties, and is one that is commonly played by children. When the game begins, people begin walking around the lined up chairs, to the music. There will be a person who is not playing who is assigned to control the music and stops it at random intervals. The people playing then rush to the seats.

The person who doesn't get a chair is disqualified from the game. Another chair is then removed from play, and the music begins again.

There are several variations to this game. Musical bumps does not use chairs-instead, when the music stops the players sit on the floor as quickly as they can. An eagle eyed watcher looks to see who is the last person to be sitting down, and that is the person who is disqualified.

Musical statues is another variation that does not use chairs. Instead, when the music is randomly stopped by a non playing person, all players stand freeze-they stand still as quickly as possible. The first person to be seen moving by a none playing watcher is disqualified from playing.

Rules

If you don't get a chair, you are out of the game.

Only one person is allowed on a chair.

The first person to sit on the chair is the one who stays in the round-if someone tries to sit down at the same time as another, the slower person loses that chair. They may attempt to get another chair if they are not all taken yet.

Hovering next to a chair is not allowed, nor is slowing down hugely as you pass a chair. A consistent pace should be maintained as you walk, run or dance around to the music.

Strategy, Skills and Tactics

Keeping focused on the nearest possible chair at all times can help you to quickly find one when the music stops. Reaching for it as extremely as possible may stop another person playing from being able to sit down before you, so if your hands are the only thing that can reach, then go for it!
