How to Play What Time is it Mr Fox Objective The objective of the game is for Mr Fox to catch the other players.
Game Layout Mr Fox stands at one end of the room or field with his back to the rest of the group. The rest of the group stand in a line at the staring line and gradually approach Mr Fox. Game Description Mr Fox stands with his back to the other players. The players call out “What is the time Mr Fox”, and Mr For answers with an hour, eg one o’clock, ten o’clock. The other players then take as many steps forward as the hour, eg they take ten steps for 10 o’clock. When the other players reach Mr Fox, he may call out “Midnight” and attempt to catch the other players before they get back to the starting line. Players that are caught by the fox either sit out, or may help the fox to catch other players during the next round. Rules The Fox must call out a time which is on the hour. Local versions of the game may use different words, eg “What’s the time Mr Wolf” or “Dinnertime” instead of “Midnight.” The players must not walk past where the Fox is standing. At the end of the game, the last player remaining becomes the next Mr Fox. One variation is to have Mr Fox stand in the middle of the field or gym instead of at the opposite end. Another possible variation is to have multiple Mr Foxes. A different variation of the game is for players to move only when Mr Fox calls midnight, and players that move when an O’clock is called become the new Mr Fox. Strategy, Skills and Tactics For the Fox, calling midnight when the other players are as close as possible will increase the likelihood of catching them. Being a fast, agile runner will help players avoid being caught. There is no minimum distance for a ‘step’, so players can theoretically shuffle forward only a few centimetres for each step, but this tactic takes much of the fun out of the game.
