You can play battleship online in www.coolgameslive.com->games->board games or click here .

Objective

The object of the game of battleship is to be the first player to sink their opponent's entire fleet of ships.

Board Layout

The game is played on a board that is sectioned into a grid and marked with numbered coordinates. Various sized ships are placed onto the grids horizontally or vertically.

Game Description

Battleship is a board game played by two people. It was first created by the French as pencil and paper game during World War I. It was published by Milton Bradley in 1931 and popularized as a board game in North America. There are many different variations of the game, including the sizes of the grids and the sizes and numbers of ships. There are also many advanced electronic versions of the game; including an electronic board game, electronic handheld games, and computer games. Some of the electronic and computer versions of the game require only one player. Your opponent is the computer in these games.

Players place their battleships on the game board in any formation they like. Each player has their own set of grids, which are usually square, and are laid out in coordinates by numbers and letters. They generally have two grids, one where they arrange their ships and track their opponent's shots, and the other they use to track their own shots. Before they start playing, both players arrange their ships on the game grid. The ships cover a number of consecutive horizontal or vertical squares on the grid. The ships can never overlap. Both players have the same types and same number of ships.

Rules

1. Players take turns attempting to get a "hit" on one of their opponent's ships.

2. The player, in turn, announces by letter/number coordinate, one square on his opponent's grid at which to shoot.

3. If the first selection is a hit, he or she may continue selecting coordinates until they miss. When all the squares a ship is covering have been hit, that ship is considered sunk.

4. The first person to successfully sink all of his opponent's ships are placed wins the game.

Strategy, Skills and Tactics

There is no real strategy to the game. It’s all pretty much hit and miss. Some people think clumping their ships very closely together is strategically their best option as it gives a large area of blank space which can easily be hit repeatedly. Others think quite the opposite, a cluster of ships is that much easier to hit. There are those who like to place their ships around the outer edges of the grid. And another group who thinks anything on the edge is an easy target. The only strategy that comes into play when calling out coordinates is the likelihood that if your fist coordinate is a miss, the square next to it is also a miss, so it’s best to skip a square or two before your next grid coordinate. But like everything else, there are exceptions.
