Heh, I learn by reading very well too, but hands on activities have always been the favored method of teaching children, and I suppose it could also teach a kid some hand's eye coordination skills as well.

I read once that engineers that never got hands on activity had problems when actually put to the test. By using computer games, experience is gained. It's not the same as actually using manipulatives, but they do make abstract math concepts more enjoyable!
