I know that Final Fantasy is often considered to be one of the most popular game series, but I've personally found other games that I enjoy much better. Here's a brief list of three specific series that I think are better.
Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are both games that truly deserve recognition. These were made by Squaresoft, but for some reason, you just don't hear that much about them. I rented Chrono Cross at Blockbuster, and I have to say that I've never been more fascinated in the depth that this game goes into. There are over 50 playable characters, the graphics are incredible, the storyline follows what happened after the events of Chrono Trigger...it's truly a special game. The best feature I enjoyed was the soundtrack, filled with memorable scores.
The Shadow Hearts Series are also a set of games that I enjoy. My favorite was the second one. Think Final Fantasy, but with a lot more humor. It follows the story of Yuri, who becomes a Demon at will. He meets characters that are truly unique, and the setting is the best quality of the games, for they incorporate modern history with fantastic demons and creatures. This series is definitely worth playing.
Another underrated Series include the Breath of Fire Saga, which follows the adventures of a dragon named Ryu. I've always loved this game, mainly because dragons are no longer seen as evil...but but majestic heroes that go against twisted, corrupted Gods and Goddesses. The story is the best part of the series, and though they aren't as graphically stunning as Chrono Cross and Shadow Hearts happen to be, the games are fun, enjoyable, and even emotional at times.
